News about the iPhone 3G and OtterBox!

Listening to our customers regarding the first generation OtterBox for iPhone case, we improved several aspects of the design including access to the silence switch, improvements to the screen and the overall fit and feel of the outer silicone. We are confident OtterBox users will be happy with the balance of protection and usability achieved with the new OtterBox Defender™ series case for the Apple iPhone 3G.
Customer feedback also led us to the understanding that they don’t always need such extreme protection; as a result, we developed the Impact™ Series, a protective, skin-like silicone. The new case provides innovative silicone corners to protect against accidental drops and bumps. The OtterBox Impact™ series for the Apple iPhone 3G is the first case in this product line and we are sure our customers will appreciate the level of drop protection this case provides while still being tough enough to be considered a true OtterBox.

I actually own a 2600 already, mistyped 2601 last post. The 2600 is a nice concept, but I am very displeased with it. I bought it thinking that my phone would be safe from accidental water intrusion. I attempted to secure it inside for several days to no avail. every time I think its secured right, I open it to check, and find that upon closing the case it has actually pushed out the screen protector gasket. I lost any hope that this case would work and am actually in the process of sending it back for a refund. I guess i'll just have to settle for the defender - which is a very nice case, but I do have to say that I am very disappointed that your company will not reconsider making an extreme case such as the previous Armor case.

Hi Michael –
Thanks so much for your comment! There are still no plans to make an Armor™ Series case for the iPhone 3g/3GS. We recommend using the 2600 case if you are looking for extreme waterproof protection for your iPhone. This case serves as a great solution for many of our customers wanting extreme protection for their outdoor adventures. Thanks again and Happy OtterBoxing!!

After reading this post almost once a week for the past several months, I am surprised and amazed that the execs at Otterbox still see no value in producing an Armor case for the 3G/3Gs Iphones. The research data regarding sales and projected sales collected on the previous model is outdated and your company has grown since then. I strongly believe in your company and own several of your products including the defender and the 2601. I also believe many more people know about your company and the fine products you produce and that you would see an increase in sales and brand recognition if you decided to make the Armor case available for the new Iphones. Please - Please - Please reconsider.

Hi Pat—thanks for your comment, we’re thrilled to hear you love the OtterBox case! Great news! As you know, there are so many 3rd party manufactures it makes it virtually impossible to accommodate them all. But our cases are designed to work with the standard Apple chargers. We don’t currently work with any other companies that manufacture the hardware side of things (chargers, adaptors, docs, etc.), however we will be sure to keep you all posted.
Anyone else have any recommendations for Pat on what might work?
Thanks,
OtterBox

Love the otterbox case. Similar to Wayne Colton's post, I'm torn though between the great protection and form factor of the case with the inaccessibility of the charge port to non-apple manufactured docks and adapters. Can't play on my iHome or FM car adaptor, which is a major factor. It would be great if someone would manufactor an adapter cable dongle/extension (male--> female) cable that would fit in the otterbox port and connect to other devices, but I haven't found anything like this online. But let me know if there is anything like this availalble.

Bob—Thanks for your comments. We do a significant amount of research to determine the cases we produce; this includes both the model and color options, which we’re looking to offer more of in the future. The “Otter yellow” has always been a top seller and proudly displays our company colors; it is extremely popular among our government, law enforcement, construction and engineering type customers. However if yellow isn’t for you or your industry, our Defender™ Series is also offered in white, black or pink for the iPhone 3G/3GS.
If you are looking for the most protective case on the market for your iPhone 3G/3GS, the 2600 will provide fully waterproof protection and has served as a great solution for many of our customers wanting extreme protection for boating, going to the beach, vacationing, surviving splashes at the pool, etc. We felt like we reached a fair compromise for those wanting more protection by offering the 2600 that adapts to the iPhone 3G/3GS (and coming soon a redesign which will have a more modern look and feel—we will keep you posted).
Most of our customers are looking for cases such as the Impact, Commuter or Defender, not extreme like the Armor. If iPhone 3G/3GS users need a more extreme case the 2600 is an ideal solution for any adventure. We are always adapting and changing with the market to offer our customers the very best cases, but we also understand we cannot meet everyone’s needs. Hopefully our redesigned 2600 will be better fit for your needs.
Thank you again for your honesty,
-OtterBox

Hey Otterbox,
In reply to your post on June 29th. Us iphone 3GS users don't want something "between the Impact and Defender Series"for this unreleased Commuter series. We really want something between the Defender and 2600 series. Amour 3GS would of been great but yes we know it won't happen. Well my purchases of any of your cases in the future won't be either. Also please tell your design team to read up on current design trends. That Hummer H2 yellow color/style of your cases is dated and tacky looking in 2009. I'd put up with it if you made a sturdy/waterproof case for the 3GS (2600 is way to thick) but you don't. Sorry for being so blunt with my comments.

Wayne Colton--The OtterBox Defender Series for iPod touch 2nd generation, and many of our other technology cases, are designed to accommodate standard chargers that come with the device. It is too difficult to make a port that accommodates all the different sized docks since they come in all shapes and sizes. Plus, many of these are introduced after our cases are already out.
By designing our cases to fit standard chargers, we allow complete interaction with the device even while its in the case. It may be that when you use your speaker bar docking station you'll need to remove your touch from the case.
Sorry for the frustration, we appreciate your support.
Thanks,
OtterBox

Need some help. Just purchased my defender case for my Ipod touch 2nd Gen. It won't fit into my speaker bar docking station. This an after marked boombox that plays your ipod music through it. Love the case, really bummed about the music. Any work arounds? an adaptor cable?
Thanks, Wayne

Matthew K--The iPhone 3G/3GS will NOT fit in the original iPhone Armor case. OtterBox technology cases are device specific.
Even if it looks like your 3G/3GS might fit, the original iPhone Armor case is ONLY designed to fit the original iPhone. In fact, our Defender Series cases even come in two case models, one for the 3G/3GS and one for the original.
Please make sure you're using the right case with the right device. We have online fitting guides and you can reach customer service at 888-695-8820 or customer.service@otterbox.com.

Will the 3gs fit in the original armor case for the original iPhone, the dimensions of the 3gs are only slightly smaller.?

That would be the answer to the prayers of the poeple wanting an Armor Series case for the Iphone. Personally, the Defender Series offers plenty of protection, and to need even more protection begs the question, why take your phone in the first place? I know there are plenty of answers, need it for work, for the pool, for hiking, for this and for that. Isn't the whole idea of hiking, swimming, and all that to get away from technology, get outside, enjoy the world around us? If you must take your phone with you, do as I do and put it in one of the small water/crush proof boxes with some foam and if you find yourself needing to use it, the defender should be plenty of protection to take it out and use it. Most the time tho I leave it somewhere safe, such as at home, if I'm going somewhere that would destroy electronics and people/work can wait til I get back from enjoying nature. No I am not anti-technology or anything like that, I am a geek and have tons of electronics and couldn't live without them but I am also an outdoorsman and it is nice to get away from them all and see some of Earth's natural beauty thousands of years in the making, before all these gadgets we rely so heavily on. Personally I just don't understand everyone going nuts there isn't a waterproof case for their phone. Just 2 years ago the only cases for cell phones were the leather ones that weren't designed to protect. Iphone revolutionized the cell phone, and Otterbox revolutionized the cell protection. We should be happy and thank them for what they do offer us. Sorry if I offended anyone, this is just my opinion on the issue. Take a second to think back to the phone you had before the Iphone and how few, if any, "protective" cases there was for it. And yes phones back then still could cost upwards of $200, I know cause my last phone was a $300 Sony Ericsson, with an unprotective leather case, cause that's all they offered.

I am on my third iPhone thanks to dust on construction sites and riding my motorcycle. I have been trying very hard to find a dust proof case for my 3GS. I saw many good reviews of the iPhone armor case online. When I contacted otterbox I was told they were never made. Many online stores have this product. I'm assuming it only fits the first gen iPhone? Is there a way to make the 3GS fit? I thought I was the only one that would do anything for an armor 3g case untill I saw this page. Please help I need my iPhone to be dust/water proof. If there are any updates on this product please contact me. My friends/co workers will gladly pre order if possible. and Thank you for your time. P.S.- My phone is wrapped in saran wrap and in a rubber case untill I find a solution. I can't afford another phone.

Reef—funny you should ask! Currently we are working on a redesign of our OtterBox 2600 PDA case. Just this morning, we were notified that engineers are looking in to a creative new design of this case that would allow use with a variety of different technology devices. By including custom foam inserts, it may be possible that this case could accommodate the iPhone as well.
As more developments arise, we will let you all know.
You can see the current 2600 case here: http://www.otterbox.com/handheld-pda-cases/2600-series-pda-case/. New design will be much more ergonomic!
Thanks!

Do you make a box that I could put my iphone in to protect it when hiking. you should pick the prefab box that best fits and sell it with an additional piece of foam that will make the iphone safe even in the roughest conditions. I have an otterbox and happen to want one for my phone too. also you could have foam pull outs so it fits a naked Iphone, in the impact or defender. In this tough economy i must protect my investment. THis idea would only require you selecting the box and making the foam inserts. would anyone else buy one.

Beau--We appreciate your suggestion. As mentioned in the last OtterBox post from July 16th, we not only look at our own research, but the research of our partners as well. In addition to our online customers who didn't care for the original Armor Series, the device manufactures, carriers and distributors we work with didn't recommend us continuing the Armor Series either.
At this point, we are moving forward with products that are in high demand and for the iPhone 3G/3GS those currently include the Impact and Defender Series models as well as a new series coming soon, see a teaser clip here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0w97Q1yufAM.

Let's look at this a different way, with millions of 3g and 3gs on the market, how many presales would you need to do a production run for the armor?

GRC—Thank you, thank you for your comment. Listening to feedback helps us become a better company and we want to keep the lines of communication open so people truly can understand our decisions. We put enormous amount of thought and consideration in all of our products and it’s based on careful market research, not just internally at OtterBox, but also from device manufacturers, carriers and distributors. Thank you for your understanding and support GRC! We appreciate it!

just reading through, after searching for the armor case for 3g(s), as i have one for the 2g and a defender case for the 3g (great case, even worth buying a 2g as a back up, just to use it for rough encounters, camping, maybe construction workers etc). after skimming through and reading all the otterbox replies, i am simply impressed with the polite, informative messages. i wouldve went postal already, repeating the same thing in a new way... cheers to otterbox! this has greatly reinforced my decision to buy otterbox products, as well as pass the brand name to inquiries of those looking for a worthy case. thank you
ps the armor case will be missed, RIP the best bang for the buck in iphone accessories! (plug) i should be endorsed by otterbox ;)

I would like to get Armor series -case for iPhone 3GS for motorcycle use as well!

Ah that's a real shame you won't be making 3G/S Armour cases. I'd certainly be interested in being contacted if you did a pre-sale or a limited edition run in the future if you changed your mind.
Thanks!
